Research - Stage 1 (Basics)

Which building typology am I researching?
The building typology that I will be researching is both Green and Modernism.

Why am I researching this building typology?
I am researching these types due to my interest with them and since that seems to be the direction in which this field is headed towards. Green architecture is interesting in how it allows the inner workings of a building, something static, and creates something that becomes dynamic through the sustainability, reusable and renewable energy. Modernism is the style and sophistication of a building along with its appearance and how it portrays itself to the world and its viewers.

What is the specialty of this building type that I would like to research? (i.e. museum for dance, school for digital media . . .)
There is one specific building type that I would like to research having never designed it and always having a passion to design. This building type is a modern hotel which also serves as a conference center which a few dining halls.

What are the examples that I will be researching? . . . list the examples, location, and architect (10 examples)
1. Arabela Hotel in Amman, Jordan ... architect???
2. Marriott Marquis in New York City, NY, designed by architect John Portman
3. Helix Hotel in Abu Dhabi, UAE designed by Leeser Architecture (for a competition)
4. Jumeirah Glasgow Hotel in Glasgow, Scotland by Ian Simpson Architects
5. Tanzanian Hotel in Tanzania, Africa by WOW Architects
6. Contemporary East Hotel in Hong Kong by CL3 Architects
7. Panoramic in Mumbai, India by Planet 3 Studios Architeture
8. Loisium Hotel in Langenlois, Austria by Steven Holl Architects
9. Axis Viana Business & Spa Hotel in Portugal by Jorge Albuquerque of VHM
10. Vdara Resort Hotel & Spa in City Center, Las Vegas the exterior designed by Rafael Vinoly of RV Architecture; the  Interior planning, architecture and design was by BBGM's New York office under Tony Machado's lead; and the AOR (Architect of Record) is Leo A. Daly of Lamberto Smigliani as Project Manager and Hamilton Anderson Associates was the AOR of interior guest rooms.

What are my goals for working with this building type?
My goals for using these typologies is not only to get a better understanding of these types but to also understand their uses and roles in a project.

What are the program elements that I see included at this point in my building? (this may evolve more once research is done)
lobby, front desk/reception, administrator offices, kitchen, bell service/luggage area, gift shops/convenience stores, rooms (regular, deluxe, suites, multi-room suites, penthouse, etc.), conference rooms (multiple sizes), dining halls, bathrooms per floor, ice room with refreshments per floor of hotel guests, mezzanine, cafeteria/buffet/dinning room, elevators/stairs

  1. Eli,
your building typology is a hotel. How you would like to approach the design is a different story
